From Combat to Community
Youth Development
Reel Grappling is developing its core programme, From Combat to Community, aimed at engaging young people aged 11–18 through free Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) training alongside creative digital workshops, including podcasting and video storytelling.
We are already delivering measurable community impact. To date, we have supported delivery at The Way Youth Zone Wolverhampton, providing structured sessions for senior youth members. We have also delivered curriculum-based sessions within Willenhall E-ACT Academy, and successfully ran 10 weeks of fully funded youth training, removing financial barriers to participation. This programme was made possible through the support of the Rotary Club of Wolverhampton.
These early interventions demonstrate both demand and the effectiveness of our approach in engaging young people who may otherwise face barriers to sport and structured physical activity.
Kelvin’s background as a Royal Marines veteran and experienced coach enables the delivery of safe, disciplined, and inclusive sessions, particularly effective in engaging young people from underserved or hard-to-reach communities.
Why It Matters
Reel Grappling responds directly to key challenges identified by Sport England, including physical inactivity, inequality of access, and disengagement among young people in underserved communities.
Many of the young people we work with face barriers such as cost, lack of provision, low confidence, or limited access to positive role models. Our programme creates an inclusive and accessible entry point into sport, using Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a tool to improve physical literacy, confidence, and long-term engagement in physical activity.
Key Areas of Impact
Increasing Physical Activity:
Participants engage in regular, structured BJJ sessions, improving fitness, coordination, and overall physical literacy—supporting long-term active lifestyles.
Tackling Inequalities:
By offering free and subsidised sessions, we remove financial barriers and prioritise engagement with young people from underserved communities.
Mental Wellbeing and Confidence:
Through consistent coaching and mentorship, participants develop resilience, self-confidence, and a sense of belonging, contributing to improved mental wellbeing.
Positive Pathways and Behaviour Change:
Structured training provides discipline, routine, and positive peer environments, supporting young people to make healthier lifestyle choices.
Community Engagement and Social Value:
We work in partnership with local organisations, schools, and community groups, strengthening local networks and creating opportunities for families to engage in positive activities together.
